由前日本首相（總理）安倍晉三發起，美國、澳洲、印度三國響應的非正式戰略對話。當時安倍晉三的目的是打造「亞洲的民主弧線」，外界普遍認為是為了遏止中國不斷增強的經濟實力和軍事力量。四方安全對話定期舉行馬拉巴爾海上軍演，原先只有美國和印度，陸續增加新加坡、澳洲、日本等國，演習地點也從印度洋延伸到太平洋海域。
近年來四方安全對話成員陸續與中國交惡，在海上封鎖中國的意圖越來越明顯。2020 年演習後，美國前國務卿蓬珮奧甚至表示，四方安全對話可發展為「亞洲版的北約」，此話被中國外交部抨擊，認為美國鼓吹冷戰思維。

Year of Establishment: 2007

Quad is an informal strategic dialogue initiated by the former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and supported by the United States, Australia, and India. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe intended to establish an “Asian Arc of Democracy” through Quadrilateral which is generally perceived as an act to curb China’s expanding economic influence and military power. Quad regularly carries out Malabar naval exercises. It began as an exercise between India and the United States and countries like Singapore, Australia, and Japan later got involved. The site of the exercise also extended from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. 

In recent years, members of the Quad subsequently have fallen out with China and their intention to block China at sea has become increasingly explicit. Following the 2020 exercises, American secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, proposed that Quad can be converted into an “Asian NATO” and was criticized by the Foreign Ministry of China as trumpeting the Cold War mentality.
