Thailand is a constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia and formerly known as Siam, a term now frequently used in modern Thailand. It is one of the top 25 largest economies in the world, only second to Indonesia among Southeast Asian countries. It is the only country in Southeast Asia that is not colonized by Western powers. As a result, its culture is well preserved. The country is also celebrated as the fashion and design center of Southeast Asia. 

The state has seen its fair share of coups. Since 1932, Thailand has undergone 28 general elections and 25 coups. 21 of the 25 coups were launched by the military. Despite having a democratic system in place, the election mechanism works in favor of the military forces. Thailand ranks no.73 on the Global Democracy Index. 

To defame the king of Thailand is a criminal offence. In 2020, people called for constitutional amendment and monarchy reform.
