緬甸國父翁山將軍的女兒，原先在英國念大學，並認識現在的英國籍丈夫。1988 年回國參與8888 民主運動，並組建全國民主聯盟政黨(NLD)，迅速成為全緬甸最大反對黨，被軍政府視為眼中釘，多次遭到逮捕，並軟禁長達六年。1991 年，翁山蘇姬在軍方軟禁的房子裡獲得諾貝爾和平獎。
2015 年，全國民主聯盟贏得大選，翁山蘇姬因丈夫是外國人，憲法規定不得擔任總統，全民盟創立新職位國務資政，讓翁山蘇姬實質掌權。任期間爆發羅亞人大屠殺，外界認為是翁山蘇姬放任軍方所為，其形象大受打擊。2021 年緬甸軍方發動政變，翁山蘇姬再次遭到軟禁，目前面臨多項罪名待審判。

The daughter of Major General Aung San (the Father of the Nation of modern-day Myanmar), Aung San Suu attended university in the UK where she met her current British husband. In 1988, she returned to Myanmar to support the 8888 Uprising and worked on the establishment of the National League for Democracy (NLD) which quickly became the biggest opposition party in Myanmar. As the military government sees her as a thorn in their side, she was arrested multiple times and put under house arrest for six years. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the residence where she was placed under house arrest by the military. 

In 2015, the National League for Democracy won the general election. Aung San Suu Kyi was prohibited from serving as president due to her husband being a foreign citizen according to the constitution. Therefore, the NLD created a new role, State Counsellor of Myanmar, to give her the de facto ruling power. During her term as the State Counsellor, the Rohingya genocide broke out. The international community holds the view that Aung San Suu Kyi sat by and watched the military persecuting theRohingya people. Her image was thus tainted. In 2021, the Myanmar military launched a coup, and Aung San Suu Kyi was put under house arrest again and is currently awaiting trial on multiple charges .
