In 2019, a series of protests and riots broke out against austerity measures, including the cancellation of fuel subsidies. Government Debt to GDP in Ecuador was 63% in 2021. A right-wing president was elected, promising to revive an economy battered by the coronavirus pandemic. Ecuador is one of the world’s top banana producers.
