Peru is a country in western South America, where the Inca civilization flourished from the 15th to the early 16th century. It’s most known for the historical site of Machu Picchu. Because of its varied geography and climate, Peru has high biodiversity. During the 1980s, Peru experienced hyper-inflation, unmanageable debt, drug smuggling related crime, and corruption. Even today, the average GDP per capita in Peru is only about 6080.00 USD. Around 1/4 of the population lives below the poverty line, but in recent years, the GDP has been slowly increasing. In 2020, the incumbent president was impeached, causing mass protests over the impeachment. Despite the deadline having been passed, the new president still hasn’t been announced. The supporters of the two candidates continue to clash, creating ongoing instability.
