衣索比亞北邊的藍尼羅河(Blue Nile) 發源於衣索比亞高原，往下流到蘇丹後併入尼羅河當中，成為蘇丹和埃及的重要水源。2011 年，衣索比亞開始在藍尼羅河上建造一個重力壩，並稱其為「復興大壩」(Grand RenaissanceDam)。
埃及和蘇丹擔心，大壩一蓋起來會危害國內水資源和糧食安全，甚至間接促成衣索比亞成為「非洲霸主」。兩國就復興大壩問題多次與衣索比亞磋商，直到2021 年都未能達成有效共識。復興大壩也成為東非重要外交議題。

* 部分台灣媒體翻為文藝復興大壩，但衣索比亞語的Renaissance 沒有「文藝」復興的意思，單純就是「復興」。所以這本日曆都用「復興大壩」稱之唷。如果之後看到「文藝復興大壩」，其實是一樣的東西。

The Blue Nile to the north of Ethiopia originates from the Ethiopian Highlands and flows through Sudan where it joins the Nile. The river is a critical source of water supply for Sudan and Egypt. Ethiopia started a gravity dam project on the Blue Nile called the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. 

Egypt and Sudan are concerned that building of the dam will jeopardize their water supply and food security and inadvertently cement Ethiopia’s status as a superpower in Africa. The two states have held many negotiations with Ethiopia over the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, but reached no meaningful consensus as of 2021. The dam now has become a critical diplomatic issue in East Africa.
