這一整塊地原屬西班牙殖民地。1975年西班牙退出殖民，北邊的摩洛哥就南想要佔領這塊土地，東邊的茅利塔尼亞也想分杯羹。但是西撒哈拉當地居民認他們才是土地的主人，於是成立一個獨立國家，叫撒拉威阿拉伯民主共和國，摩洛哥對抗。
目前摩洛哥佔領靠海、擁有天然氣資源的西半部，西撒人陣佔領靠非洲內陸寸草不生的東半邊。2020年11月，西撒人陣宣布不履行停火協議。該區域現仍在戰火當中。

This piece of land was originally a part of a Spanish colony. In 1975 when Spain pulled completely out of this former colony, Morocco in the north attempted to take control of the territory, while Mauritania to the east also wanted a cut. However, the local residents of Western Sahara claimed sovereignty over their own land, so they founded an independent country, named the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to fight against Moroccan control. 

Currently, Morocco occupies the western part of the territory that runs along the coast and provides access to natural gas reserves, while the Polisario Front backing the Sahrawri controls the grassless eastern part of inland Africa. In November 2020, the Polisario Front abandoned the ceasefire agreement, leaving the area still trapped in ongoing conflict.
