Located on one of the critical ocean shipping lanes of East Africa, Djibouti is a transportation hub for vessels traveling between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. On top of its strategically important location, having a natural deep water harbor also makes Djibouti a top naval base choice for the US, France, Japan, and China. However, covered mostly by deserts, the state is economically underdeveloped, ranking second-to-last among the Arab League nations. It is also one of the least developed countries in the world. The state can barely maintain its operations by leasing military ports to big powers while running the immense risk of being caught in a regional conflict.
