Tunisia is an Arab country in North Africa. Its capital city, Tunis, sits on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is only 221 km from Sicily, Italy. It is also considered the Arab country that has the closest ties to Europe. The first president in 1957 kicked started modernization and economic liberalization, creating the economic miracle of Tunisia and making the country a model for developing countries. The Jasmine Revolution broke out in 2010 and the people of Tunisia toppled the authoritarian regime of the time, indirectly triggering the Arab Spring. Tunisia is also the only Arab Spring country that peacefully achieved democratic transformation.
