Algeria is an Arab country in North Africa and is the largest country by area in Africa and the 10th largest in the world. It has Africa’s third-largest fossil fuel reserves and eleventh-largest reserves of natural gas. The entire economy relies on the export of these two petroleum products, which account for 90% of the country’s total exports. The state has the highest Human Development Index score in continental Africa. Algeria supports the Polisario Front in the dispute over sovereignty claims to Western Sahara. The Hirak Movement, a series of anti-government protests broke out in 2019, calling for the end of military rule. The protests are still ongoing.
