Mauritius is an archipelago geographically located beyond Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. 70% of its population are of Indian descent, the result of the large Indian workforce introduced during the British colonial period. Sovereignty dispute exists between Mauritius and the UK over Chagos Archipelago. Even after the International Court of Justice ordered Britain to hand over control of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, ruling the island chain to be part of their territory, Britain has refused to pull out. What’s more, thousands of U.S. soldiers deployed on the island further complicates the issue of handing over the territory. Mauritius is regarded as one of the most competitive African countries. Its Human Development Index score is also the second highest among African nations. Tourism, textiles, and financial services form the mainstay of its economy. It was once regarded as a tax haven and attracted a large number of foreign investments. But the state was also criticized as a “country for the rich” for this reason. Mauritius was also once the one and only habitat of the dodo. Unfortunately, this famous bird was driven to extinction.
