Malawi is a landlocked country in East Africa and its land area is about three times the size of Taiwan. Classified by the UN as one of the least developed countries in the world, with a mere GDP per capita of USD407, Malawi and its neighbor Mozambique both fall among the ranks of the poorest countries in the world. The state had diplomatic ties with Taiwan for 41 years. Taiwan supported Malawi in its fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic by providing massive medical resources, but this effort to maintain diplomacy was thwarted by enormous financial aid poured in by China. As a result, Malawi cut its diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The Chinese-funded Parliament Building and Malawi University of Science and Technology are even printed on Malawi’s 200 and 2,000 currency bank notes.
