Lebanon is a West Asian country sitting on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Having control over the strategic pathways to Europe, Asia and Africa, Lebanon’s critical geographical location has made it the most contested ground between different powers. Hezbollah is the most prominent opposition party in Lebanon. Also a militant group, Hezbollah has close ties to Syria and Iran. At the same time, the conflict between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization has also extended to Lebanon. Instability has become a long term state for the entire country with constant conflicts. Its GDP per capita in 2020 was less than US$3,000 and the state is one of the countries with the heaviest burden of public debt (in the top five). Lebanon is also the only Arab country where Christians and Muslims coexist and share political power: the presidency and military command are usually reserved for Catholic Christians, with the premiership for Sunni Muslims.
