It’s easy to confuse this state with its neighbor just to the south, the Republic of Guinea. The Republic of Guinea-Bissau is located in West Africa. It is one of the least developed countries according to the United Nations and is heavily indebted. In the past, Guinea-Bissau’s debt was twice that of its GDP. Now, things are better, and its debt is 0.7 times its GDP. However, its people are still living in poverty and the country relies heavily on foreign aid. Since its independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has experienced 9 coups and coup attempts. Many presidents and military leaders died in those coups.
