A country in the Horn of Africa of East Africa and bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Somalia sits on the one and only global shipping route to the Suez Canal. In 1991, after its dictatorial president went into exile, Somalia was split up by warlords. Now, although five of the six federal member states have declared their allegiance to the federal government, in reality these states operate autonomously. One of the member states, Somaliland, declared independence, but is still claimed by Somalia as a part of its territory. After the country became engaged in a long ongoing civil war, pirates begun to run rampant in this area which controls the important shipping routes to the Gulf of Aden. Al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based jihadi fundamentalist terrorist group, frequently launches terrorist attacks with neighboring Kenya also suffering badly from the aggression. In 2020, The Economist ranked Somalia as the least peaceful state in the world.
