After joining the WTO in 2001, China’s GDP per capita rose from one thousand U.S. dollars to 10,000 U.S. dollars in 2020, making it the second largest economy in the world. In recent years, the country has been actively promoting the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and has signed cooperation documents with more than 140 countries. Since 2018, externally China entered into a fierce trade war with the United States under Trump’s administration and internal controversies like Xinjiang Uyghur re-education camps and Hong Kong anti-extradition law protests broke out. China claims to have sovereignty over Taiwan but has never been its de facto ruler.
