The incumbent prime minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, took office in 2018 as the youngest head of state in Africa. A liberal politician, he pardoned more than 7,000 political prisoners right after taking office and encouraged dissidents overseas to return home and set up political parties. Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for volunteering to return the disputed territory to neighboring Eritrea. However, the Tigray War broke out at the end of 2020 in northern Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed ordered communications blackouts in Tigray and other states before sending troops north to pacify the local militia group, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The war led to famine in Tigray and reports of local genocide emerged. Abiy thus has been heavily criticized by the international society.
