A country in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is the most populous land-locked state in the world with a population of 112 million and also home to the headquarters of the African Union. The per capita GDP of the country is less than 1,000 US dollars, and its Human Development Index score is also ranked among the bottom 20 in the world. But when the young prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, took office, his dedication to reform and opening up the country brought along a wave of progressive movement. In 2020, the Tigray War broke out in the north and the conflict spread to neighboring countries with no signs of ceasefire in sight. The ongoing Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project will impact the water supply of Sudan and Egypt, paving the way for a regional conflict to potentially erupt.
