Spanning the two continents of Europe and Asia, the Russian federation is the largest country by area in the world. Mostly located in Asia yet with over 70% of its population residing in the area closest to Europe, it can be categorized as an Asian or European country, but the United Nations lists it as part of Eastern Europe. It has the 12th largest economy in the world with a GDP per capita of 10,000 USD.
Although Russia renounced communism and transformed itself into a democratic republic after the Cold War, Putin, the current leader, still leans more towards dictatorship and is considered an adversary by most Western countries. A military powerhouse in the traditional sense, Russia has the largest storage of nuclear weapons in the world with armed forces currently stationed in Eastern Ukraine, Armenia, South Ossetia, Eastern Africa, and Central Asian countries. Russia is a permanent member of the United Nations and extremely influential globally.
