Ossetia is a geographical area with limited official recognition sitting somewhat north of central Georgia. Just like Abkhazia, South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia when it declared independence from the Soviet Union and established the Republic of South Ossetia. In 2008, Georgia took military action against South Ossetia, but despite occupying two-thirds of South Ossetia, Russian troops quickly drove out the Georgian troops. Eventually, Georgia and Russia signed a ceasefire agreement, leaving South Ossetia in a similar situation as Abkhazia in terms of sovereignty with it now only being recognized by a handful of countries.
