Located in the south of Sicily, Italy, the Republic of Malta is described as the heart of the Mediterranean and “the garden of Europe.” The service sector, financial sector and tourism are the mainstay of its economy. Its GDP per capita is as high as US$28,400, close to that of Taiwan. It is the world’s fifth most densely populated country, ranking behind Monaco, Singapore, Bahrain and the Maldives. According to 2012 research done by the well-known scientific journal the “Lancet,” Malta is the world’s most physically inactive nation, as 71.9% of Maltese adults lead a very sedentary lifestyle. Maybe the blame can be pinned on the country’s coziness.
