Madagascar is an island country to the east of Africa. It is also the fourth largest island in the world. As a result of the island’s long isolation from the African continent, Madagascar is home to a wide range of unique plants and animals. Approximately 80% of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic. And thus some ecologists refer to Madagascar as the “eighth continent.” Eco tourism and agriculture form the economic mainstay of the country. Poorly developed, Madagascar’s GDP per capita of a mere USD515 places it among the lowest of the world. More than a million people faced food shortages in 2021, as the result of the worst drought ever in 40 years. The United Nations has issued a warning and is calling for food aid from the international community.
