An Arab country in West Asia, modern Iraq is situated in the Mesopotamia region, the cradle of one of the four major ancient civilizations. Dictator Saddam Hussein took power in the 1980s and ruled with an iron fist. His eventual capture and execution by the U.S. in 2003 allowed Iraq to officially transition to a democracy. However, in 2014, ISIS, a Sunni terrorist group, emerged in Iraq and the U.S. troops invaded Iraq again. ISIS currently has been almost fully eradicated from within Iraq and the democratically elected government has gotten back on track. However, the U.S. troops deployed in Iraq continue to clash with neighboring Iran, causing Iraq much trouble.
