Haiti is the world’s first black-led republic in the Western Hemisphere and the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. Approximately 95% of the population of Haiti is Black Creole. In 2020, the GDP per capita was only US$1,250 and was considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Haiti has consistently ranked among the most corrupt countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index, similar to North Korea. In 2010, a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. An estimated 250,000 people died in that earthquake. At least another 300,000 people were injured. Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, was devastated. Haiti is one of Taiwan’s allies. In July 2021, President Moïse was assassinated in an attack on his private residence. As this article was written before its election to determine a new president,  Taiwan’s future relations with Haiti are still unclear.
