Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. It was first a Spanish then a British colony, and is currently a member state of the British Commonwealth. Its economy is dependent on bauxite and alumina mining, sugarcane, and tourism. The GDP per capita is around US$5,100. In recent years, the country’s national debt has grown very large. The government is trying hard to reduce debt through measures such as investment from China. Jamaica has had one of the highest murder rates in the world for many years. On the international stage, Jamaicans have tended to do particularly well in track and field athletics. Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, is still known as the fastest man alive.
