Croatia became independent from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and it is now a member state in international organizations like the EU, NATO and the UN. Although its economic ranking is among the lesser developed European countries, the state scores high on the Human Development Index. Its citizens are entitled to national health insurance and free elementary and secondary education. The state volunteered to join the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces and dispatched troops to Afghanistan as part of the NATO campaign. It is now waiting to join the Eurozone with the expectation of bolstering economic development and maintaining currency stability.
