Romania is located in the Balkans. The Danube, the second-longest river in Europe, forms a natural border along the south, separating Romania and its neighbor, Bulgaria. Romania joined the Axis Alignment with Germany during WWII, and its defeat gave rise to communism and nearly 47 years of communist rule. It wasn’t until the Romanian Revolution in 1989 that the country set out on a path toward democratization. Romania joined NATO and the European Union in succession and acted as a defense force guarding the Black Sea. The UN ranks the country very high in its human development category (in the world's top 25%), and its GDP per capita has reached US$12,000. The most popular individual sport is gymnastics, and the number of competition medals won by Romania rivals that of the United States and Russia.
