Formerly a Soviet republic, it is considered an important country by China in developing its Belt and Road project and the essential path from China to Central Asia. 40% of foreign debt in Kyrgyz is to China. After the anti-government demonstration in 2020, the current President, Sadyr Japarov, took office and maintains a friendly diplomatic relationship with China and Russia. Kyrgyz has a distant relationship with the U.S. now and in 2021 released a drug-trafficking crime boss sanctioned by the U.S. With ongoing border conflicts with neighboring Tajikistan, their bilateral relationship soured in 2021.
A little trivial knowledge, famous poet Li Bai was actually born in today's Kyrgyz.
