This state is located in the Western Sahara region of North Africa and claims sovereignty over the entire area, but in fact only has control over less than a quarter of the land, the less fertile part. The remaining 80% on the side of the Atlantic Ocean is occupied by Morocco. This republic was founded in 1976 by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro (or simply Polisario Front) and held power over a long period of time. Sahrawi has its own parliament, judiciary institutions and legislative council. Currently, 39 UN member states recognize it as a sovereign nation, including many African countries. However, there are other countries which support Morocco’s claim to the entire territory of Western Sahara, such as the United States.
