Mexico is a federal republic in Central America. After 300 years of Spanish colonization, it is currently the largest Spanish-speaking country by population. 60% of the population has mixed European and Native American ancestry, while 30% are the descendants of Native Americans. Mexico is a country rich in history, tradition, and culture and has preserved many Mayan ruins. In 1994, Mexico entered into NAFTA, gaining access to the huge markets of the US and Canada, but the low prices of US agricultural exports also destroyed the livelihoods of small farmers in Mexico. Drug cartels are a major concern in Mexico. Serious gun battles often occur between drug cartels or with the government. Many politicians who swore to fight against drug cartels were murdered.
