This is an area located in the north of Cyprus, commonly known as Northern Cyprus. The earliest settlers on Cyprus were the Greeks. After the 16th century, the Turks across the Mediterranean Sea moved over as well. Cyprus later gained independence from the UK. When northern Cyprus and southern Cyprus divided, residents in Northern Cyprus declared the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with support from Turkey. Its sovereignty is so-far only recognized by Turkey, not internationally.
