Spanning both Europe and Asia, it is one of the earliest regions with human settlement, boasting of a dozen world heritages. Since taking office, the current President Erdoğan has aimed to turn Turkey into an Islamic power state and to resume the former glory of the Ottoman Empire, and therefore has taken a tough attitude diplomatically. For example, fighting Greece for the East Mediterranean Sea, going head to head with the French President, and buying weapons from Russia as a NATO state. He has also actively engaged in various conflicts within the region; for instance, the Libyan Civil War, the Syrian Civil War, and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Domestically, they have been in conflict with the separatist Kurds for decades. Turkey ranks no.11 in the world in terms of the size of its number of enlisted soldiers, so not to be trifled with in terms of its armed forces.
