Sitting between Moldova and Ukraine, although it is also known as Transnistria in English, its proper name is Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. It unilaterally declared independence from Moldova in 1990, when Moldova was still part of the Soviet Union. So far, it is only recognized by counterpart entities with limited official recognition themselves, including Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Internationally, it is still considered part of the Moldovain territory. In a 2006 referendum, 98.07% of the population voted in support of joining the Russian Federation in the future, with 94% voting against returning to Moldova. There are currently 2,000 people in the Russian Federation armed forces stationed within its borders.
