A part of Melanesia in the Pacific Ocean, the state consists of more than 990 islands, most of which are volcanic islands. Guadalcanal Island, where the capital sits, is a turning point of the development of the Pacific Theater of World War II.
Each province is ruled by different indigenous groups and clashes have since broken out multiple times. A Solomon civil war once took the lives of thousands of people. For a long time, Australia did not want to see the Solomon Islands leaning too close to China. After years of power struggle between China and Australia, the Solomon Islands government eventually announced severance of diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2019. However, Malaita, the most populous province, disapproved of the central government's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan and planned to hold a referendum for independence. In 2020, it received a huge sum of aid from the United States.
