Situated within the Micronesian archipelago in the Pacific, Palau shares a similar history with Micronesia after World War II, and also signed the Compact of Free Association with the U.S. Occupied by Japan during World War II, the country is influenced by both American and Japanese cultures. Peleliu, the second largest island, is ground zero for the famous Battle of Peleliu between the U.S. and Japan, and the war remains can still be seen to this day.
Palau places such great emphasis on marine protection that tourists are forbidden from using sunblocks that may harm the coral.
A diplomatic ally of Taiwan, Surangel S. Whipps Jr., the newly elected president in 2021 was born in the U.S., and after he assumed office, the pro-U.S. and anti-China attitude he had laid a solid foundation for diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Palau.
