Abkhazia is an entity with limited recognition located within the borders of Georgia and close to the Black Sea. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, unwilling to remain an oblast of Georgia, Abkhazia waged the Abkhazia War in 1992 which caused a tremendous humanitarian crisis. In 2008, with the help of Russian armed forces, all Georgian forces were driven out of the area and the Abkhazians have since gained full control of the territory. Currently only recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Nauru, Syria, and other entities with similarly limited recognition including South Ossetia, Transnistria, and Artsakh; internationally, it is still considered part of the Autonomous Republic of Georgia. Half of its national budget is dependent on Russian aid and much of the rest of its economy is also dependent on Russia. Abkhazia was once a semi-tropical paradise for Russian tourists.
