Located in East Asia, Japan is the largest developed country in Asia and the third largest economy in the world after the United States and China.
After its defeat in World War II, the country was transformed into a parliamentary constitutional monarchy and its emperor became a figurehead. It is an important ally of the United States in East Asia and the two jointly defend the Pacific Ocean. Japan and South Korea have a territorial dispute over the Liancourt Rocks (referred to as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan). The state also has disputes with North Korea over the latter’s nuclear program and the abductions of Japanese citizens.
Japan is very friendly to Taiwan and donated more than 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Taiwan in 2021.
