Mauritania is an Arab state in West Africa. After breaking away from French West Africa in 1960, it has seen multiple coup d'états and remains a highly unstable political state. Mauritania once competed with Morocco for sovereignty over Western Sahara. It then withdrew from the fight in 1978 and switched its support the national self-determination movement of the Polisario Front. It was the last country in the world to officially abolish slavery. Until 2016, 1% of the population was still trapped in forced labor. Islamic teachings play an instrumental role in its judicial system and people also live their lives according to the doctrine. Oh, one more trivial fact to share: the society of Mauritania perceives plus size women as a symbol of wealth.
