A landlocked country in South Asia, Afghanistan sits at the crossroads of the Eastern and Western world, boasting of diverse cultures, and is thus strategically important. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was established when the Taliban officially came into control in 1997. In 2001, after the 911 event, the U.S. initiated a war in Afghanistan on the account that the Taliban harbored Osama bin Laden and AL-Qaeda, and removed the Taliban from power, establishing a democratic government in its place. Afghanistan remained under the control of the U.S. forces until 2021. Due to the many years of war, the people were unable to make a proper living. The GDP per capita in Afghanistan thus ranks in the bottom ten in the world, and it was listed as the world's least peaceful country by the United Nations. In 2021, when the U.S. removed its troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban once again quickly took over many cities, announcing the return of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in August the same year. The world is still watching.
