位於烏克蘭東部的頓巴斯區域，2014年俄羅斯入侵克里米亞後宣布獨立，由親俄分離分子創立政權，名為頓內次克人民共和國，至截稿前全球僅俄羅斯、敘利亞和北韓承認其主權。境內有7成的人民以俄語為母語，長期收看俄羅斯視角的新聞台。國家主權認同在頓巴斯非常複雜，這裡的居民大多擁有在俄羅斯的親人，或是在烏克蘭的朋友，很難斷言他們到底支持烏克蘭還是俄羅斯。至截稿前俄羅斯軍隊已控制50%的頓內次克，預計俄羅斯還會加強攻擊，以拿下頓巴斯全境為目標。已有7成居民已疏散，但仍有部分民眾不願離開。一位30多歲的頓內次克居民在戰爭爆發後對媒體說：「我們到烏克蘭也會被討厭，被說是分離叛徒，但出生在這裡不是我們的錯。我們無處可去。」
看2022位於烏克蘭東部的頓巴斯區域，目前和盧干斯克人民共和國，以及克里米亞自治共和國一樣，由親俄勢力領導，烏克蘭官方認為上述三個領土是因為俄羅斯的軍事干預，才會暫時被佔領。主要城市由親俄羅斯的武裝分子控制，約有50%以上的人口居住在其管轄範圍內。僅獲得同樣為未經廣泛承認實體的盧干斯克和南奧塞提亞的正式承認。

Located within the Donbas area in Eastern Ukraine, Donetsk is currently led by pro-Russia forces just like the Luhansk People's Republic and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The Ukrainian government believes that the temporary occupation of these three territories is only possible because of Russian military intervention. Major cities are mostly controlled by pro-Russian militants with over 50% of the population living in areas under their jurisdiction. So far, it is only officially recognized by counterpart entities, Luhansk and South Ossetia, which have limited recognition themselves.
