One of the under-developed Southeast Asian countries, Cambodia is known for the ruins of Angkor Wat. The most representative icon of the ruins is a smiling Buddha sculpture “Khmer Smile.” After the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975, the entire country was engulfed by political conflicts, and eventually the Hun Sen regime backed by Vietnam won and ruled Cambodia for more than three decades.
The backbone of its economy is the tourism and garment industries. Many Taiwanese textile companies set up factories here.
