85% of the land area of Gabon is covered in tropical rainforest. The country has a small population but high species diversity. Gabon has abundant oil deposits in the sea. Therefore, its economy is better off than other countries in Central Africa. Compared with other Central African countries such as Chad and the Republic of the Congo, Gabon is more politically stable and has served as a conflict mediator in the region. Gabon is a member state of OPEC and Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). The headquarters of the latter is located in the country’s capital.
