Age: 38 years old
A member of the third generation of the ruling Kim family, Kim Jong-un studied in Switzerland with his sister Kim Yo-jong using pseudonyms when he was young. It was said that back then he was a big fan of the Chicago Bulls and star player Michael Jordan. In 2011, his father Kim Jong-il passed away, and the 26-year-old Kim Jong-un succeeded him and became the third-generation leader of North Korea. After taking power, he proposed “Byungjin Policy,” emphasizing simultaneous development of military weapons and the economy by actively exploiting natural resources, steering infrastructure building, developing industries, and strengthening the steel and chemical industries to support the nuclear weapons program which put the whole world on edge.
Following the footsteps of his grandfather Kim Il-sung and father Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-un also built his personal cult. Leading a secretive private life, he often disappears for 20 or 30 days and rumors of his death due to terminal illness run wild. Relations with South Korea and the United States once became friendly in 2018, but in 2020 they took a turn for the worse. His younger sister Kim Yo-jong ordered the bombing of the joint liaison office with the South. Security of the Korean peninsula is as unpredictable as Kim Jong-un’s whereabouts.
