Status: Taiwan applies to join CPTPP
After the US withdrew from the TPP, Japan took over and the agreement is now named CPTPP. The CPTPP aims to support sustainable and inclusive economic development in the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement covers the trade of goods, rules of origin, trade remedies, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, trade in services, intellectual property rights, government procurement, and competition policies.
Japan serves as chair of the CPTPP and since China hasn’t signed the agreement, it is one of the few multilateral trade agreements Taiwan might be able to join. As of 2021, 11 countries have finished signing, and the applications of the 7 countries have been approved. The US doesn’t rule out the possibility of rejoining CPTPP and the UK has shown interest in joining CPTPP after Brexit. Taiwan is applying to join CPTPP.
