Title: The Prime Minister of Japan
Age: 74 years old
In 2020, Yoshihide Suga succeeded Shinzo Abe in the wake of his early resignation and became the 99th Prime Minister of Japan.
Suga started his political career working as secretary to Hikosaburo Okonogi, a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) member of the House of Representatives and he stayed in the position for 11 years. Afterwards, he was promoted all the way up to serve as the Chief Cabinet Secretary to Shinzo Abe (equivalent to Taiwan’s Executive Yuan Secretary-General and Speaker) for 8 years.
Yoshihide Suga is the first LDP prime minister who has no faction-affiliation and political hereditary background. As he did not belong to any faction, he became the ideal candidate successor to Abe who belonged to a dominant faction of his party, as the result of power balance between factions. He has a gentle personality and a reliable political track record, neither showing eye-popping behaviors nor out-of-the-line speeches. He pretty much followed Shinzo Abe’s policies. In 2019, he was in charge of the announcement of Emperor Naruhito’s new imperial era title “Reiwa” and was thus called “Uncle Reiwa.”
