王儲/威爾斯親王查爾斯（Charles, The Prince of Wales）74歲
Monarch / Queen Elizabeth II, 96 years old
Heir / Charles, The Prince of Wales, 74 years old
Queen Elizabeth presides over one of the oldest monarchies still in existence and is an important figurehead for unifying the UK, but she has no real political power. The current British monarchy is ruled by the House of Windsor. Starting 1917, the reigning Elizabeth II is the fourth monarch of the House of Windsor. The deceased consort Prince Philip was originally the Prince of the Kingdom of Greece, but relinquished his title upon marriage to the Queen, and became a member of the British royal family. There are currently millions of people with bloodlines connected to the lineage of the British royal family.
Although only a symbolic head of state, the British monarchy has quite a heavy workload. Domestically, the Queen must chair the opening of the congress, give her royal consent to parliamentary bills, and meet regularly with the Prime Minister. Internationally, the higher ranking royal family members must receive visiting foreign guests, visit foreign countries, and take part in events and ceremonies. The British royal family’s expenditures reach tens of millions of pounds per year, so there are people advocating abolishing the monarchy. There are currently 54 members in the British Commonwealth, among which, 16 countries accept the British Queen as their head of state, forming the largest personal union (known as the Commonwealth realm) still in existence in the world, with a combinedtotal population of about 134 million people.
